Exposition

Three hours ago I declared my assignment piece done and ready. The effect I soughed was still not there. But my ears were tired. Enough.

Two hours ago I went through my field recordings looking to complete the sound report. So many beautiful sounds I lost sight of in trying to build something bigger and better. More. More.

I decided I wanted them in my piece. But how can they build a story, these field recordings? How can they fit in my story? Line them up and something is formed. A narrative. Maybe there is no need to rewrite the whole thing. Somehow they fit together.

I realised what I was building up until this point was the climax and the denouement of the story. What it was missing was the exposition. Context. Background. If what I was aiming for a feeling of aimlessly falling, there needs to be stability first.

What I learned? When it’s not coming together, pull back. The answer’s somewhere else.
