Visitor Practitioner Series: Yan Jun

Beijing based poet and musician. Regularly writes for The Wire.

He uses noise field recording, body and concept as materials. Sometimes he goes to audiences home for playing a plastic bag quote. ‘I wish I was a piece of field recording’.

Started using body gestures in his performances in an attempt to free himself from the table electronic music performers are usually constrained to.

Jun makes a point to not talk about his technical setup, suggesting that each artist needs to find their own. He does mention he uses feedback, most of his music being based on a 50Hz noise.

It was interesting to hear about the differences he perceived between the Chinese and European audiences and how these led him to incorporate more acoustic elements and start using his body. I liked the idea of considering the cultural background of the audience and questioning whether or not it is appropriate and allows your performance to reach them.
