Salomé Voegelin on Listening Strategies

This was a public talk held online for the First and Second-year Master students and Third-year Bachelor students at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen on February 2nd 2021.

In this talk Salome makes some interesting points on art – science interdisciplinarity and ways under which it could function.

It is mainly focused on the emerging field of Arts Research Knowledge and how this practice based knowledge (which she calls tacit/cultural knowledge) can gain validity in its own right.

tacit knowledge = ‘aesthetic knowledge of ourselves in the world, as sensorial beings, with an impact on our sense of identity and belonging, our social behaviour’

The part that I found most relevant in the context of my essay is the highlighting of the arts – science rapport where art is usually seen as a means to illustrate scientific knowledge and is expected to follow its’ taxonomies and structures.

The main advantages of artistic research thinking are its’ fluidity, its’ openness, its’ ability to ask questions without aiming for a specific answer. Systematising it to fit the scientific ways of research would inhibit these exact qualities. As Salome concludes: we should not just seek a place at the table, we should also be able to make claims and to have a say in the way the table is laid out.

‘we do not have to become scientific researchers, we do not have to accomodate another discipline’

However, the need for a way to formalise artistic research is being recognised in order for hybrid collaborations to develop successfully.
