In this post I will talk a bit of what I have tried so far.
I have been gathering sounds that could pass as ASMR-ish/pleasurable.
DPA microphones:
- stroking hair with microphone taped to neck;
- nails on carpet;
- tape on microphone foam;
- ink pen scratches on paper.

Mubu for Max – Concatenative Synthesis – similar to the Ableton Simpler, the main difference being that the grains are arranged by frequency and loudness which makes for different possibilities when playing with them. I used it with some recorded whispering along with the Sound Toys Tremolator and Crystallizer.
One thing I am trying to do with this assignment is restrain from using music. I often tend to find myself adding music in the final stages. One other thing I am avoiding is adding spoken words. After last years’ assignment one important point from my feedback was taking the time to consider how much of the concept do I want present representatively in my piece and how much I want to just use to inform it. I think this goes back to the discussion on representative vs. performative art.
I will also be including some voice samples played with the Simpler in Ableton. I plan on using them mainly for texture to add to the idea of presence.
