Salt

Why salt?

I started thinking about salt last semester through vapours and sublimation.

What does salt mean to me? When I think of salt I think of purity. Cleanliness. Cold. Humid and dry. Rituals of purification and protection. Preservative? Repellant. Sterility. Permanence.

Dried out. Lifeless.

Motivation, goals, unexplainable needs? (to the self?) – ibex goats climbing nearly vertical doms to lick salt?

Anorganic matter regulating the fluids of the body. Humours. Osmosis. Gradients. +. -. Balance. Movement. Flow. Inside. Outside. Membrane. Semi-permeable.

What does it mean sonically?

I am thinking in installation terms.

First idea that came to mind is boiling salt water until the water is evaporated.

In a performance context, by using measured quantities, this might act as a metronome. Maybe having multiple alcohol lamps set?

The chemistry setup hints at cleanliness, but I feel it also fits with the ritualistic theme.

The sound is not as satisfying as expected.

Next:

-try different vessels?

-try different different microphones? (the microphone used for this was Sennheiser MKH 416)

-think of other gestures.

-other materials to consider: * naphtalene? can sublimating it make a sound?

*thyme? – food item customarily used in rituals – how would it make a sound?
*onion – layers; feminine; also used to be considered sacred;

I wonder if this is more suitable for an audio visual work? short, simple visual observations with sound?
