Clicks and Crackles

One of my aims with my sound piece is to blend together organic and anorganic sounds.

I am interested in the perception of intimacy in vocals (particularly female) and this idea of closeness.

Going back once again to the vapours motif (?), I was watching a video a while ago where the dance of the seven veils was mentioned (the dance of Salome). This dance is funny enough also called the dance of the vapours. What I found interesting about it is that at the end, after Salome, removes her seventh and last veil, the king is said to keep shouting ‘more! more!’. This is what interests me in my piece. This never-enough proximity, this sort of essentialism.

One of my first experiments was using a small diaphragm DPA microphone extremely close to the mouth and whispering ‘is it close enough’. This recording I then ran through Izotope’s De-click and de-crackle, but keeping only the clicks and crackles. These I will be using in my work.

I have been using the same recordings with Ableton’s Granulator II to obtain small melodic and percussive sounds from the recording.

For the voice processing I used Ableton’s Wavetable with a loaded vocal sample. The instrument allows for me to sample certain frequencies separately and play them through MIDI.

As mentioned before, Granulator II was also used for vocal sampling for the granular quality it gives the sound. Clicks and crackles are also present in the final piece.

I ended up using a combination of vocal and synthesized sounds.

The synthesized sounds were mainly made with Mother 32, Doepfer, Neutron.
